Great North Run 7th September 2014

Report by Claire Jones

On Sunday 7th September Dover Road Runners Claire Jones, Elaine Ellender and Jenny Phillips travelled to Newcastle to take part in the Great North Run. It was very special this year not only because the Great North Run was celebrating its millionth finisher but also because their friend Heather Keen had to withdraw last year's race due to a diagnosis of breast cancer and had come back this year and was determined to complete the course.

It was a surprisingly hot and sunny day which is unusual for the Great North Run which is often cloudy and drizzlyThis made for very tough conditions, nevertheless it was still a very enjoyable and amazing experience. Finish times were as follows.

Claire Jones in her 4th time running the course led the runners home achieving a PB of 2:08:43.
Jenny Phillips in her debut at the distance and the event achieved a time of 2:14:20.
Elaine Ellender on her second visit achieved a course best time of 2:29:42.
Their friend Heather, returning following treatment for breast cancer, completed the course in a heroic 3 hoursand 15 minutes.
The team raised over £800 for Breast Cancer Care.
